Veterinary Service of Ukraine could resume inspections of polish meat companies after bilateral talks on February 1
The State department for veterinary medicine may resume inspections of Polish meat processing enterprises concerning the issue of license for meat imports to Ukraine after bilateral talks, which are due to take place on February 1.
Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy Petro Verbytskyi announced this in an interview with the Kommersant-Ukraina newspaper published on January 29.
“The re-start of inspections of Polish companies will be a subject of the bilateral talks in Odesa on February 1,” he said.
According to him, the imports of Polish meat to Ukraine depend solely on the desire of the Polish veterinary authorities to settle the problems uncovered during the previous inspections of Polish companies.
“Our demands have been ignored by the Polish counterparts until now, though our claims are of purely technical character and address the state control in the observation of the sanitary code of the International Epizootic Bureau mostly,” he said.
He said the situation with meat imports from Moldova was also difficult.
“We don’t mind the exports of the produce originating in [Moldova]. But, the imports of meat in Moldova are ten times the amount of meat that can be consumed by the local population. The balance is exported to Ukraine,” he said.
He noted that meat was re-exported from countries with unfavorable epizootic situation such as India and China. The meat can bear viruses of plague or smallpox, he said.
The prospects for the re-start of meat imports from Belarus are much better, he said.
“In the near future we are planning to increase the number of enterprises licensed to import meat in Ukraine. I am not ready , however, to say how many companies will import meat in Ukraine,” he said.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, in March 2006, the State department for veterinary medicine banned meat imports from Poland, Belarus, and Moldova due to case of meat exports from the said countries without required veterinary documents.
