Chisinau calls on international community to use available levers to determine Tiraspol to resume negotiations
Chisinau called on all international actors involved in the process of Transnistrian settling to use available levers with a view to determine Tiraspol regime to resume constructive negotiations. Such statements were made at the OSCE Permanent Council on March 22, 2007.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, during the reunion Moldovan delegation stressed that an effective dialogue over a sustainable Transnistrian settling will be possible only if Tiraspol takes specific measures with a view to demilitarize and democratize the region.
At the same time, the European Union, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova called on Transnistria to adopt a constructive attitude and come to the negotiation table ready for serious discussions about the items on the agenda. To this effect, the three delegations reiterated their firm support for resumption of 5+2 negotiations on Transnistrian settling as soon as possible, the cited source reads.
US and Moldovan officials noted that “the so-called control points and duties levied by Transnistrian authorities, as well as blocking access of country and international organizations’ diplomats accredited in Chisinau to this region represent arbitrary and illegal acts that contravene with the Ceasefire Agreement signed between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Moldova on 21 July 1992”. In the context, the delegations called on the Tiraspol regime to eliminate “all obstacles on the way to free movement of people, goods, and services. The USA and Moldova addressed to Russia with an appeal to use its influence on Tiraspol administration with a view to resolve promptly this problem.
The 5+2 negotiations in the Transnistrian matter (Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine, Russia, OSCE and the EU, the USA) were suspended in February 2006. Mediators and observers’ attempt to organize a new round this February failed because Tiraspol refused to participate.
